Sesshū Tōyō
These hanging scrolls contrast an open autumn sky with a winter cliff. Forms lead the eye upward into distance. Sesshū studied Chinese painting during his journey to Ming China; the work invites comparison between inherited landscape conventions and the structural force of his brushwork. The image shows one of the scrolls.
