Life and career
Origins and training
Watteau was born in Valenciennes and moved to Paris as a young man. Painters Claude Gillot and Claude Audran introduced him to theatrical subjects and decorative design.
Places, turning points and artistic change
He developed the fête galante: small gatherings in garden-like settings where flirtation can feel uncertain or melancholy. The Academy accepted his Pilgrimage to Cythera in 1717 under a newly created category.
Beyond the studio
Drawing, theatre and music were central to his work. Prints made during and after his lifetime helped spread his ideas; engravers’ names should remain visible beside his own.
Works across a career
Selected examples, not a complete catalogue. Read date ranges and attributions before inferring a career sequence.
Reading the selected works together
The theatrical print and garden gatherings share an interest in performed roles: a costume or a turned head can change a whole encounter.
