THE PERSON AND THEIR WORLD

Life and career

Origins and training

Born in New York, Lichtenstein studied art in the city and at Ohio State University. Teaching and earlier painting experiments preceded his breakthrough with comic and advertisement imagery.

Places, turning points and artistic change

From the early 1960s he enlarged dots, contours and dramatic scenes. Later he applied a related language to art history, landscapes, brushstrokes and sculpture rather than remaining only a comic-book painter.

Beyond the studio

Prints, murals and public sculpture carried his work into many settings. Borrowed source images are important to understanding his method and the difference between quotation, copying and transformation.

Works across a career

Selected examples, not a complete catalogue. Read date ranges and attributions before inferring a career sequence.

Reading the selected works together

The advertising figure, food image and dramatic heroine apply a similar graphic language to very different subjects.

    Artist-wide context

He enlarged the dots, outlines and dramatic scenes of comics so we could see how their effects were made.

ARTISTIC CHARACTERISTICS

Materials, marks and colour

Media and surface

Paint and print techniques imitate the appearance of commercial reproduction.

Marks and structure

Even contours and enlarged dots replace the appearance of spontaneous brushwork.

Palette and light

Limited strong colours make emotion look deliberately manufactured.
