Life and career
Origins and training
LeWitt was born in Hartford and studied at Syracuse University. Graphic design work, including time in architect I. M. Pei’s office, preceded his major structures and wall drawings.
Places, turning points and artistic change
Modular constructions developed into drawings carried out from instructions. Later work expanded from faint pencil lines to saturated painted fields and dense graphite marks.
Beyond the studio
Teams of draftspeople realised many works. Their execution and named contributions are essential: the idea, instructions and each particular installation are related, but not identical things.
Works across a career
Selected examples, not a complete catalogue. Read date ranges and attributions before inferring a career sequence.
Reading the selected works together
The serial structure, early line drawing and late painted wall show a widening vocabulary within a persistent interest in systems.

Saturated colour and an irregular outline complicate the idea that all his work is a simple grid.
Materials, marks and colour
Media and surface
Instructions can be realised in pencil, crayon, ink or paint.
Marks and structure
A simple rule generates variations; later shapes need not look mechanically regular.
Palette and light
Layering and material changes move the work from pale lines to strong, saturated colour.
