THE PERSON AND THEIR WORLD

Life and career

Origins and training

Born Jacopo Carucci near Empoli, Pontormo took his familiar name from his home village. In Florence he trained with several painters, including Andrea del Sarto.

Places, turning points and artistic change

Michelangelo’s figures and northern European prints helped him move beyond balanced Renaissance arrangements. Unusual spacing, bright colours and psychological tension became central to his religious pictures and portraits.

Beyond the studio

He also worked on large fresco projects. Some, including his late San Lorenzo choir decoration, were destroyed, so surviving drawings are essential evidence for the wider career.

Works across a career

Selected examples, not a complete catalogue. Read date ranges and attributions before inferring a career sequence.

Reading the selected works together

Compare the formal portrait of Cosimo, the crowded Joseph narrative and Alessandro’s more private pose; portraiture and storytelling need different spaces.

ARTISTIC CHARACTERISTICS

Materials, marks and colour

Media and surface

Paintings and drawings let him plan figures before arranging them into larger scenes.

Marks and structure

Bodies can twist, overlap or seem suspended instead of resting securely on the ground.

Palette and light

Unexpected pinks, greens and cool highlights can heighten unease rather than describe ordinary light.
